On the previous pages you have seen how the Mercedes-Benz European Delivery Program works. The travel itineraries are endless, and I can help you modify them in many ways. In Stuttgart you could stay at the Hotel am Schlossgarten and tour the surrounding areas, just ask me for suggestions. I have brochures and maps for you, to help with your planning. When you are in Munich, you can visit Berchtesgaden, Mittenwald, and while in Garmisch-Partenkirchen you could take the funicular to the top of Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze. Last but not least, an hour away and across the border, you can visit Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg in Austria and many other places.

Eagles Nest

Many clients ask me about Berchtesgaden and Hitler's Eagle's Nest, his mountain retreat 6,017 feet high up in the Bavarian Alps. To get there is a special trip by bus, then a 400 feet walk through a marble-lined tunnel, and finally a 400 feet ride in the original brass-lined elevator to the top of the mountain. From Munich it's less than one hour's drive to Berchtesgaden.

Another short drive on the Autobahn gets you to the ever-popular birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg. Who hasn't seen "the hills come alive" castle with Julie Andrews and her flock dancing around the nearby hills to "The Sound of Music", an unforgettable musical set in this so romantic city. The name of the city means "Salt Castle", referring to the massive fortress and the white gold from the mountains in the South. It is the country's fourth largest city, and its approximately 150,000 inhabitants claim it is Austria's most beautiful spot; it can best be explored on foot. Here, Mercedes-Benz has contracted with a native hotel that is a alleylandmark by itself, the Hotel Goldener Hirsch. It's location makes it very convenient for you to explore this magnificent city. Located across from the Festival House and down the street from Mozart's House, it's also just a short walk to many designer boutiques and the Salzach River. The Hotel has 65 rooms and four suites, two authentic Austrian restaurants and a famous bar. You'll love it!

As long as we are in Austria, how about visiting the capital of this wonderful and diverse country, Vienna? Oh yes! Who wouldn't want to see all those beautiful palaces, and dance the waltz to the music of Johann Strauss. You could spend weeks in this absolutely great city, and still miss out on its many sights and sounds. But in the short time you are there, at least try to visit Schoenbrunn Castle, the Spanish Riding School, the Stefansdom, and the Hofburg. Your visit to Vienna would not be complete without attending a performance at the famous Vienna Opera, regardless of what's offered at the time you are there. A highlight of your visit to Vienna will be your stay at the world-famous Hotel Sacher, established in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of the creator of the Original Sacher-Torte, a unique chocolate cake with a layer of Apricot jam. The Sacher-Torte was created by Franz Sacher fiftyWhite Hotel years earlier in 1832, when he was a 16-year old apprentice at the court of Prince Metternich. He was asked to create a special desert for the most distinguished guests. They loved it, and it became known as the Sacher-Torte. The guest-book of the hotel has been signed by celebrities like the Prince of Monaco and wife Gracia Patricia (a.k.a. Grace Kelly), Queen Elisabeth II, Indira Ghandi. John F. Kennedy, Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan. As you can see, we'll keep you in excellent company on your journey through Europe! The only thing you don't want to do is have breakfast at this hotel, unless you're ready to pay fifty dollars per person! A reasonable alternative is simply a short walk across the street to - you guessed it - Starbucks!

Park Hotel Mignon

If you have a bit more time, you might like to drive south to the border of Tyrol and South Tyrol. The latter belongs to Italy, and the mountains there are a must to see - the Dolomites - what a sight! And if you do go there, be sure to let me know in advance so I can book you a stay at a special rate in Merano at the one-of-a-kind, absolutely fabulous family-owned 5-star Park Hotel Mignon, one of my all-time favorite hotels in Europe. You'll love the rooms, the service, the ambiance, the location. It simply is the perfect place for a little bit of R & R, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy world around us. I assure you, a few days at this place will become a highlight of your vacation!

Many clients ask me about driving to some of the Eastern countries, with Prague and the Czech Republic being mentioned the most. Of course you can drive there, and Prague is probably one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe. Official driving distance from Stuttgart to Prague is 773 kilometers or about 500 miles. If you can drive from San Diego to San Francisco in one day, then you can do the same in this case. Prague (Praha) is the ancient capital of Charles IV's Bohemian Kingdom, and the city has played a pivotal role in the development of Central Europe since the Middle Ages. Its epic history has made Prague one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with tourism of vital economic importance. Prague is not overrun by tourism, however, its effects are evident for all to see. Much of the post-communism reconstruction and regeneration of this gorgeous city has been driven by tourism, as ancient buildings have been transformed into fine restaurants and stylish hotels.
